Understanding Technology for Learning Differences
Four in-depth workshops on how to use technology to assist struggling students
Pasadena, CA | July 28-29, 2015
- Technology for Reading & Comprehension – fluency (speed and accuracy), comprehension, critical thinking, and reading annotation
- Technology for Writing & Composition – composition, mechanics (spelling, grammar, etc.), and motor aspects such as producing legible text and math notation (equations, graphs)
- Technology for Notetaking & Study – taking notes in class, capturing notes from reading (books, Web, etc.), organizing personal knowledge, creating study guides
- Technology for Attention & Executive Functions – managing distractions, organizing papers and digital files, keeping track of responsibilities, planning and managing use of time
These four 3-hour workshops are designed to help parents, teachers, and other educational professionals use technology to assist students with learning differences, ADHD, and executive functioning issues. I will familiarize participants with key concepts for specific academic skill areas (Reading, Writing, etc.); demonstrate how various technology features and functions support specific learning challenges; and help participants differentiate between products so they can ask educated questions at IEPs, talk more confidently with technology vendors, and make informed decisions about technology tools. The workshops will also offer learning strategies that leverage tech tools and a framework for matching tools to a student's needs.
Intended Audience
These workshops are designed for parents, teachers, and other education professionals who support students with learning differences in grades 4 through college. Older students may also register, but please be aware that I will not be teaching participants how to operate specific programs or devices. (See Workshop Format, below.)
Workshop Format
Lecture, demonstrations, and some "lite" hands-on activities using participants' own devices (for example: Chrome browser extensions, tools built into your device's operating system, and visiting certain resources on the Web). These workshops will not provide step-by-step, "how-to" training for any products. If there is sufficient interest, we may arrange group how-to sessions at a later date.
Each workshop will be approximately 3 hours long, with plenty of time for questions and answers. Participants in each workshop will receive a comprehensive handout and will also create an individual action plan identifying what steps to take next.
Should I bring my laptop or tablet?
Attendees are invited to bring their own Mac or PC laptop, Windows tablet, iPad, or Chromebook if they wish to follow along on some of the "lite" hands-on activities (please see caveat above), but it is not necessary. The week before the workshops, I will send registrants a short list of free apps and browser extensions to install in advance.
Workshop Location and Schedule
All four workshops will be held at a private residence in Pasadena. We will send you the address once you register.
